[Part 1] 99. Korean culture

Today, my teacher taught us more about the Korean culture.

#1 Conversing on the telephone
You must have realised by now after watching so many Korean dramas that Koreans don’t exactly say anything before they hang up the phone. I mean if you say “bye”, at least I know that I can hang up the phone right? So what my teacher taught us is that if you are on the phone with someone older than you, the rule of the thumb is to wait for the other person to hang up the phone first before you do. But if he/she still doesn’t hang up the phone after 30 secs, then you can hang up first.

#2 수고하세요
While you can’t use this phrase for people older/higher (in terms of hierarchy) than you, you can use it for people whom you hire/engage or you pay money to for their services e.g. the bus driver or taxi driver. I couldn’t help but wonder why we can’t use it when speaking to our teachers then since we are indirectly paying them to teach us. JUST a thought.
