Getting the best of/from Gmarket

This post is not related to my life in Korea but about my love affair with Gmarket, my favourite shopping site :)
It’s going to be a lengthy post so beware!

Love affair
My love affair with Gmarket started way back in 2007 after my A levels examinations with days and nights spent going through pages and pages of searches for apparels and bags I wanted.

Then in 2008, I made the big step in making my first Gmarket purchase. I wasn't sure of what to expect, how delivery was going to be done, etc; basically I had no one to turn to for advice other than the Gmarket customer service centre. Furthermore, I took a huge risk by ordering many items at one shot even though it was my first time placing an order. Thankfully, everything went smoothly and for this, I must applaud Gmarket's customer service centre because all enquiries I sent to them were always promptly replied to within a day or two and this was very reassuring for me.

For me, I always pay for the items using PAYPAL or my cash balance in my G account and items are delivered via EMS to Singapore.
I like it that Gmarket is very reliable and efficient. With months of shopping with Gmarket, I can gauge the time it takes for my items to arrive in Singapore from the time my purchase is made, such that I can receive my items by whatever date I need it by.

As to how long it takes to receive your items, it really depends on the number of items you order and the time period the individual Gmarket seller(s) take(s) to send out your items to the warehouse for international shipping preparation.
On average, for an order of 30 items, it'll take 1-2 weeks for the items to reach me from the time of order placement and payment.

Best AND favourite purchase of all time
2 years back, I saw Han Eun-Jung in this gorgeous dress which she wore for the Blue Dragon Awards 2008...

Alas, I lack the figure and most importantly, the money to purchase such a beautiful dress so I immediately went to Gmarket to search for a similar dress. Within the next few weeks (days and nights of trying different keywords for the search like chiffon, sequin, shiny...I finally found the right word: spangle), I found this:
Item url: http://english.gmarket.co.kr/challenge/neo_goods/goods.asp?goodscode=157810384

Perfect!
It looked so nice on the model who’s skinny but then again, I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off given my figure so I just added the page to my favourites tab.

Then on 30th January 2009, Wonder Girls held a Peripera beauty class and…Yoobin was wearing the exact Gmarket dress I saw!
That just kind of did it…the moment I saw the dress on Yoobin, I knew I had to get it.

Then came the dilemma: I couldn’t decide between the beige or the pink one. In the end, I ordered the pink one…but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted the beige one so I sent an enquiry to the Gmarket customer service asking if I could still change the colour of the dress. It was too late because the item was already delivered to the warehouse. Furthermore, for international orders, Gmarket doesn’t allow for an exchange of items or change of colours of items. BUT they made an exception for me! So I paid an exchange fee of 5,000KRW (for the mailing charges) and my shipment was delayed by 2 or 3 days but what mattered most was that I got what I really want and what I am happy with  :)

On 9th March 2009, I finally laid my hands on my dream dress.

BUT I didn’t quite have an occasion to wear it…so I wore it in the Korean video I had to make for class.

Then finally, I had a real occasion to wear it again :) For my 21st birthday party and my cousin’s wedding dinner on 23rd January 2010. Wearing this dress sure made me feel like a million bucks!

As the pianist to entertain the guests with some jazz, classical and korean songs before my cousin's wedding dinner @ Swissotel started :)

I received many compliments on the dress and many asked where I got it from. So I’ve decided to be nice to all and share this entry with all of you! Now you know my secret!

False eyelashes from Vox which I think are better than the m.a.c falsies I got for JC Prom. They're so natural and light that after awhile, I almost forgot that I had falsies on!

Competitive pricing
During my stay in Korea last year, I fell in love with this top after seeing it on Zipia and in Dongdaemun. It was retailing for 38,000KRW in Dongdaemun and after successfully bargaining it down to 30,000KRW, I felt all smug about my great purchase until I returned to my hostel and decided to check if it was selling on Gmarket. And it was…at 26,000KRW!!!
So I learnt from my mistake then…better to do my homework and check if the item can be purchased for less on Gmarket before making the purchase elsewhere.

For the Singaporeans who shop on Zipia (http://zipia.net), do you know that most of the items can be found on Gmarket for less as well?

Also, except for THEFACESHOP and MISSHA products which are not shipped internationally, BOBBI BROWN and ETUDE HOUSE and LANEIGE items can be shipped to Singapore and they are so much cheaper than local prices!

To search for for items that do international shipping by adjusting the tabs in the search results.
Even though there’s Etude House here in Singapore, it doesn’t carry the hair essence product I bought in Etude House in Korea. Thank goodness for Gmarket, I could stock up on it!
Forewarned: you can get addicted to Gmarket and it took me quite some time to wean off this addiction which comes back again every time I decide I must have a particular piece of product e.g. waistshaper, party dress, quilted bag, hair bands (inspired by Gossip Girls), or pretty shoes.

Problems faced
Of course, as with shopping online, there is always the risk that the sizing is wrong so do your own research/homework and pray that you got the right size!

Also,  I encountered 3 wrong items sent to me but all enquires were addressed promptly. Likewise, Gmarket made the refunds to me promptly as well. So do check your items when you receive them and if there are any wrong items, do take photos of the wrong item sent and email them to: global@gmarket.co.kr together with the details of the original item you had ordered.

Shopping on Gmarket when you’re in Korea
If you're staying in Korea for some time and plan to shop on Gmarket, I would advise you to seek help from a Korean you know when you receive a call from the delivery man with regards to the delivery of your item(s).

During my stay in Korea in 2009, I shopped from Gmarket as well and assumed the delivery would be made to my hostel lobby just like how my items are delivered to my doorstep in Singapore without any calls made so I never expected it that the delivery man would call me to confirm my address. I'm not competent in the Korean language and I'm far from it with a long way to go! More often than not, I have the tendency to switch off after hearing a Korean speak really fast so I end up not catching a single word of what he or she says. Which was what happened when the delivery man called.

My Korean friend had lent me his phone and gotten a phone number for me. When this man called me and started speaking very fast in Korean, I told him, "You got the wrong number" in Korean. I didn't know who he was and I couldn't catch a single word because he spoke way too fast. That afternoon, I got another call and the same thing happened again. But when I got a 3rd call the next next day, the delivery man spoke slower and was more audible. I realised he was calling with regards to the delivery of my items. Which means that the first 2 calls were by delivery men and I told them they got the wrong number -_- In the end, I had to contact Gmarket and ask for the re-delivery of both items. One arrived eventually while the other never came. Thank goodness that missing item was really cheap! So do be careful when shopping on Gmarket in Korea itself!

For those who are interested in purchasing items from Gmarket, I'll be opening more Gmarket sprees after my exams in May on http://spreesgalore.livejournal.com. Do let me know if you wish to participate in my sprees as we can share the shipping cost of the items.

Hi Clara,

I'll be going to korea on the 25th mar to 5th april, any idea how cold it would be by then? And, what should be worn in that weather?

Thanks for helping (:

Hello Catherine,

That'll be early spring, lucky you! I've never experienced spring in Korea before; only summer and winter! So I can't really give you any advice. Maybe 2 layers and a coat? Are you going with a tour agency or free and easy? If the former, perhaps you can check with the tour company :)

Hello, I'm Jolyn and I'm going to matriculate into NUS this year. I'm interested in the NUS Korean modules but the problem is, I do have some background from self-study and I don't know if I'm good enough to skip Korean 1 altogether. If that is so, then I would not be eligible for the KLPP as well. Would be extremely grateful if you could share more about the difficulty of the basic module, maybe though email/MSN?

Hi Clara,

I'll be going Free and Easy to Jeju, Jeonju, Yongin and Seoul. Yup, so maybe 2 layers and a coat would be fine (: Thanks so much :D And the post on GMarket is interesting! Would try it out!

Enjoy your trip! I've not been to Jeonju (heard the bibimbap there is really delicious...and check out the bamboo forest too!). Have fun shopping on Gmarket too :)

Hello Jolyn,
If it helps, for LAK1201 Korean 1, we use the Kyunghee Beginner textbook 1 so you can use that as a reference. You can purchase it from NUS CO-OP bookstore at the Kent Ridge Campus.

Hi Clara,

My Friends and I are going for the Korean Immersion at Yonsei this coming June-july and we were just wondering - Are the cultural classes only cooking classes or are there other things like pottery making, traditional instruments etc.?

claralala said...

Hey Jom,
The cultural classes are not restricted to cooking classes; 2 of my classmates took taekwondo. I believe there are other classes like singing, and maybe, as you mentioned, pottery making, traditional instruments, etc.
I presume you're under Ms Chi? She might be able to find out more information from Yonsei about the different classes available this summer.
You'll have lots of fun during the immersion :) Sinchon is a great place to stay in! It's just beside Hongdae :)

hello! happened to come across your blog. the design of your profile pic is very nice. may I know what design program did you use?

I am thinking of purchasing items from gmarket too but I have not tried purchasing items from korea before. How much did you spend on shipping cost for your purchase of 30 items? that must have cost you a bomb right?

clara 은진 said...

Hello Siew Khim!
I used photoscape :) Unfortunately, if you're using a mac like I do now, you can't use the software. It can only work with Windows :(
With regards to the shipping cost, I'm sorry but I can't advise you on that because it really depends on the estimated shipping weight.
You can view the charges here: http://www.gmarket.co.kr/challenge_eng/neo_help/international_shipping_info.asp
What you pay for is the estimated shipping weight and if the actual shipping weight is less than the estimated shipping weight, the difference will be refunded :)

Hi!
I still have some questions regarding my immersion that's coming up this july...Mostly question to do with costs of living/ travelling there.

How much did you spend on transport when travelling within seoul, when travelling from seoul to Busan and within Busan? (I hope it wasn't alot because my friends and I are planning to travel alot within seoul but we don't wanna spend too much money on traveling expenses)

Did you apply for a handphone line while you were there? How much did it cost?

Also, about the homestay, how was your family like? Did some people get stuck with, for lack of a better word, "awkward" families?

Sorry for spamming you with so many questions at one go, but my friends and I are trying to plan our trip now and we feel like we don't really know what's gonna happen and all. We're deciding if we should extend our trip or not.

Thanks for your awesome blog btw! We feel so excited when we read your posts! :)

clara 은진 said...

Hello Jom,

I spent 283,690KRW on transport for my trip, inclusive of the many taxi fares when I got too lazy to climb the hill leading to the Yonsei hostel, Jejuair fare from Jeju to Busan and my share for the Avis car rental cost in Jeju. So you definitely can cut cost if you walk more or take the bus instead of taking the taxi like I did. I daresay you'll frequent Ewha Women's University street very often if you are spending most of your time with your female friends so to cut cost, you can actually walk there from Yonsei and back if the weather's nice and cooling.

I applied for a handphone line and it cost me 37,300KRW for the whole trip. I had less than 500KRW value left when I left.

With regards to the homestay, my family was really nice to me but of course there were times of awkwardness due to my lack of ability and courage in speaking out in Korean. I enjoyed homecooked Korean food, a bbq pork belly dinner, karaoke session and even joined in the children's class for a cultural visit. In general, I think the Koreans I met were really nice, and when they knew I was a foreigner and needed help, they really went all out to help me :) But of course, my experience for homestay is different from my friends' because we were assigned to different families so we did different stuff :) so now that you all still have time, study and revise your Korean! Make sure you know how to ask for and interpret directions!!! That's really important and we only learnt that in the middle of our immersion program.

As for whether you should extend or not, it depends on your airfare I would say. Had I stayed in Korea for less than a month, my SQ airfare would have been $800+. Just for 2 additional weeks, I paid the 1-year airfare of $1200 :(

You're welcome :) Hope you'll have a blast in Korea too! I'm counting down to my upcoming trip too...going to do a week long homestay with the Korean boy I've been giving tuition to here in Singapore. He's returning to Korea for good next month.

Feel free to ask me if you need any help!

hiies , i have read your blog and i would like to ask you 1 question .

I tried to purchase Korea G market items by PAYPAL . However , it always been canceled and the transaction failed. But when i use my PAYPAL for E-bay . It works

So is there any requirement needed b4 purchasing the G market items ?

clara 은진 said...

Oh dear! I've never encountered such a problem before actually! Could it be the type of browser you are using? Maybe you want to consider switching your browser? When I use Chrome, pictures on Gmarket don't even load properly so I normally use internet explorer. Having said that, I've just switched to a Mac and haven't shopped on Gmarket for sometime so I'm not sure if Safari's alright. Why don't you email the customer service and ask if they have any solutions for you? Perhaps you can email them global@gmarket.co.kr or post a comment on their facebook wall! http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000150515851 There's no requirement before purchasing G market items!

Hi Clara!

I love your blog! You documented your trip really well. Appreciate the time you spent doing that to enlighten people like me on korea. :)

I have a few questions to ask you. I do apologise if some of them are a little silly.

1) I will be heading to Seoul in June and was wondering if everything in places like Migliore and Doota are available in gmarket.

2) Price wise, would you say gmarket is cheaper than migliore and doota if you include shipping to Singapore?

3) I recently just found out about gmarket.com.sg . Have you personally bought from it? And are the items similar to the ones in the korean site?

4) If you have purchased from the sg site, do they call you before they deliver? Just like how you described in Korea? I was wondering because I'm actually not from Sg but plan to have it delivered to a sg address.

Thank you. I'm so jealous of you for getting to do exchange programmes in Korea. Have fun in your next exchange!

Hello Sue!

Sorry for the late reply! Haven't been checking my blog :(

Thank you :) Start checking everyday from 2 August onwards! I will try my very best to blog everyday and make sure there'll be an entry for each day of my trip. I'll be leaving in exactly 2 more months! Excited to the max :)

Here are the answers to your questions:
1) Well, I wouldn't say everything but I believe most stuff are available. HOWEVER, do note that it's a long tedious process searching for the exact items (especially clothes or bags) on Gmarket unless you use the right key words for the search (including searching for the items in Korean). So if you're not prepared for all the work required to save a few dollars, then perhaps you should just buy the items when you see them!

2) Gmarket can be cheaper/equivalent/more expensive than Migliore and Doota if you include shipping to Singapore. There are some Gmarket sellers who really mark up prices by a HUGE margin and there are also those who don't so you have to sieve them out from the search results. With regards to shipping cost to Singapore, it depends on how many items you actually order. If you order more items, the shipping cost can be spread over a larger no. of items, decreasing the shipping cost per item.

3) I signed up as a member of Gmarket.com.sg about 2 years back but I've never used it though because I'm more familiar with global.gmarket! So I'm afraid I can't advise you on that :( and I guess I can't answer 4) as well!

Oh...where are you from?

Thank you...I actually gave up a place in medical school in Australia in late 2008 amidst the financial crisis with all the uncertainty. Even though it has been quite some time ago, I still feel quite sad at times so I guess I really need this Korea trip to cheer myself up!

Sue said...

Thanks for the answers Clara! Detailed, I like! :)

I guess I will just buy from Migliore and Doota then. I have been scoping out Gmarket for ages but haven't really dared purchase anything yet. Plus my Korean is terrible. Just figuring out which colour is which for the item has given me a headache haha.

I'm from Malaysia actually so I was pretty excited when I found their sg website but they only deliver to sg ㅠㅠ I will try it out though since it's easier.

I'm so sorry to hear about that. Well at least there's a sliver lining to the cloud. If it wasn't for that you wouldn't have the chance for the korean exchange programme. Besides you never know, it could have been a blessing in disguise. :)

Will definitely read you blog when you update! Take care and thanks again for the answers!

claralala said...

Hello Sue,

You're most welcome :) If you do shop from Gmarket and need help in figuring out the colours, just ask me: http://www.formspring.me/eunjin

Oh, Malaysia :) I have quite a number of relatives there!

Yup, maybe it's a blessing in disguise! haha :) No problem, have a great week ahead and good night :)
